Research & Inspiration for Landscape & Wildlife Paintings
I find spending time in wild landscapes, watching birds and being around animals always lifts my spirits, I am fascinated by the way animals have always been an intrinsic part of human existence, not only feeding us and providing physical support but creating meaning, stories to live by and metaphors in our language and literature.
I have incessantly researched the relationship between humans and animals which over time has confirmed a long held philosophy that animals, as far as I am concerned, are more than equal to humans. In the way that I may be equal to a lion and that all living things are equal to each other, we are all food for something, all have our part to play, intrinsic parts of a symbiotic, seamlessly interconnected existence. This perspective allows for respect and compassion in all our interactions.
Drawing on stories from a range of literary genres and my personal experience, the intention of my work is to explore the way in which we (humans and non humans) experience the world, to raise a question in the mind of the viewer, create work which reflects a thoughtful and considered engagement with the natural world and the broader landscape, the influence of the geographical environment on the mind, mood and sense of well-being, the way in which it affects us all.
The best purpose for my work would be to bring meaning to the lives of the people who view it and encourage the broader public to show respect, compassion and ultimately protect the non human beings with whom we share the planet.
I try to engage in thoughtful projects such as the 'Ghost of Gone Birds' project at the Migration Festival in Camden, also the PAN project on the Lizard in Cornwall, the BTO Red67book and Plover Rovers. I like to support charities who work hard to support and protect birds and animals, who do an amazing job in raising awareness, protecting and helping birds and animals locally, nationally and internationally.
